What would it mean to you if NDA closed as a result of the new laws and mandates (seat time, sponsor rating)

What it would mean
Posted 12/1/2016 at 8:55:49 AM by [anonymous visitor]
What would it mean to me if NDA were to close? Well, it would mean that a very good school is being closed. We just started at NDA this year after hearing rave reviews by other parents. Now I know what all the hype was about. This school is great because it has the best of both worlds. You can do school anytime like regular home school but you can also get the one on one help you so greatly need from time to time. There is no great travel distance to Columbus, like in our previous home school. The people are so helpful and dedicated to seeing the students succeed. So, to me it would not only mean finding another school, but loosing a great school experience for my student. I look at all the students who come in for tutoring and I hear the stories. This school means life or death of their graduation for many of them. The young mothers who could not go to brick and mortar schools easily with their new babies would be affected. Those with sicknesses and those being bullied by others. Those students and parents who need varied and flexible schedules in which to do their schoolwork/help with schoolwork would all be affected. I say "Please keep this school open!"

I think it is very important to our community to have options for completing school. Newark Digital provides an alternative to the "brick and mortar" school. If the goal is to graduate students, then provide different ways to meet that goal. One size does not fit all!!
What NDA closing would mean to my family
Posted 11/20/2016 at 7:36:09 AM by [anonymous visitor]
I have 2 kids in NDA, they have helped my oldest get college credits, and my youngest to enjoy school again. We previously used another digital academy, where it was very impersonal, and it would take weeks for my oldest to get any help if he had a problem or did not understand an assignment. NDA has teachers available to help students. they make the kids feel better about themselves. They treat all the kids equally and in the 2 years we've been using them, they do not let any bullying take place. They give the kids awards for doing good, and it helps the kids feel like some one cares, and not just "do your work or get out" like our previous experiences. If this school closes, the community as a whole would be losing an important resource for our children, and our future.

Im a mother of three kids that attend NDA. If NDA was to close I dont know where my kids will go to school. My oldest child was being bullied and I was being called to the school every day for some issue they where having with him or that they could handle. He was getting Ds and Fs in his classes. I felt if I had to do the schools job then my son should be at home with me. Every school he has been in before NDA was like this. He has attended NDA since the beginning of the school year and I havent gotten the first call because they are having issues. As far as my middle child I was being called to school not because he was a behavior issue or that he was being punished it was because they would tell me he wasn't in school and I would tell them he there he been texting me. There response was come here and find him then. I would go to the school and find him and things would be fine. He also was failing every classes. If I have to again do the schools job then he should be home with me. Since enrolling at NDA he does his classes and he passing all his classes with As and Bs. My youngest child was being bullied and he hated school. It was a fight every day to get him to go to school. Since enrolling him at NDA he loves school and there is no more fights. He also is getting all As. All three of my kids received awards for the first nine week. Which has never happened before. I owe a lot to NDA staff and teacher for helping me. Please dont close this school. My kids and I cant do public schools.
The meaning to me
Posted 11/18/2016 at 3:02:34 PM by [anonymous visitor]
I love NDA schools, as it is the first school I have been to that cares. If it were to close down then I would have to go back to those schools that have treated me like just another "trouble maker". With NDA, I have jumped a grade, got into a college credit plus program, and have exceeded my goals for grades. I would hate for this school to close.
No Job
Posted 11/17/2016 at 9:33:56 AM by [anonymous visitor]
Essentially, I would lose my job. I have worked to hard to be at my job. Before I had my job, I was a nobody with no life, hardly any real friends. Now at Goodwill, I have real friends, real opportunity, and money to spend. I would have to go to Newark High, and that's not acceptable.
NDA Closing
Posted 11/16/2016 at 9:33:46 AM by [anonymous visitor]
I came to NDA because I was being bullied and beat up everyday at my high school and the school didn't want to do anything to help I didn't feel safe and I hated going to school because I knew what was going to happen. This in turn make my school grades suffer and I ended up almost failing for the whole year. I have an Iep and couldn't get the help I need to success. Since coming to NDA I have been able to complete my assignments and have gotten the help I need to graduate in June. I feel if I had stayed at my other high school I would have dropped out when I turned 18 due to I didn't feel safe and felt i would never make it to graduation. If NDA closes I would have to either go back to my high school or drop out. I feel better about myself and I received my first award ever the other night from NDA. Thanks to the NDA teacher and staff for all their help especially Sharon Berard.

what it would mean?

To me it would mean alot because NDA basically saved me. Before i went to nanother high school and i always got bullied. It would lead to me getting low grades and just lowering my self. It lead to me trying to kill myself. And somehow the whole school knew. Which lead to me getting bullied out of the high school. With NDA I can be myself i been getting better grades and boosting my self esteem to become the police officer i want to be. So it would mean so much it would make me loose my dream and myself .

Problems with hours
Posted 12/1/2016 at 8:56:06 AM by [anonymous visitor]
I agree with most of the students and parents' replies on this issue. I believe that if the student is getting the work done and their grades are good the hours shouldn't matter.
25+ hours
Posted 11/20/2016 at 7:36:18 AM by [anonymous visitor]
I hate this hours things. It stupid and hard. It doesn't take all kids 26 hours to complete 5 assignments. I think as long as there homework is complete they should be fine.

26 hours

I have been a student at Newark Digital for 5 weeks or so now and i can never complete 26 hours.I don't think a young student like me should worry about how many hours they put in.More on putting effort in the work for better.
25+ hours
Posted 11/16/2016 at 9:34:19 AM by [anonymous visitor]
I hate the 25+ hour that we are required to do. We are required to do 5 lesson a week and it doesn't take me 25 hours to complete those 5 lessons. I feel that as long as my lesson are being completed and are corrected that should be enough. If I do more then 5 lesson then great but I shouldn't be required to sit at the computer for 25 hrs.
too much

doesnt take me 26 hrs to comlete my assignments and its just a bother afterwards
Please dont close the school

If NDA was to close then I would just be another high school dropout running the streets of Newark. I came to NDA because I have Panic and Anxiety Disorder so its very hard for me to be in schools like Newark High the school also got me into a lot of trouble and my grades were very low but since I started NDA my grades have went up dramatically and I am very proud of myself. I totally agree with you. Being a student at NDA, it is really stressful sometimes meeting all of my hours.
Hour Requirements
Posted 9/22/2016 at 6:59:05 AM by [anonymous visitor]
This is our second year at NDA. We were extremely pleased with our decision to transfer our student from public school last year. However, with this new requirement of the students needing to meet the mandatory 26+ hours a week has been very difficult to say the very least. We understand that there may be some students that need to take a little extra time per lessons/class, but there are also the ones that can move fairly quickly. One of our decisions to change our student from public school to homeschooling was based on the fact that she was able to move along at her pace with an individual schedule suitable for her needs. Unfortunately, this option is slowly fading away. We've had numerous technical difficulties with the tracking software. The software was not crediting her for hours she was working resulting in a lack of attendance. This new requirement of hours is extremely stressful to our student as it is to us as well. Homeschooling is based for kids that need a more individualized program that public schools can not provide. We as a homeschool community need to work for these kids, to see more students graduate. You can not measure a childs education on the amount of time spent in the class but on the quality and support they are receiving. The students success is based on a team. We as parents, students, teachers, and deans lay the foundation for a successful future ahead for each one of our forthcoming graduates. Time spent is not quality, but quantity. "Growing individually, achieving together!"
Too Much

Going to NDA has helped me catch up tremendously in school but i don't have time to be logged in 5.5 hours a day.when i can get my work done for the day in an hours i then have to sit by my computer for another hour everyday so i don't get expelled. That is completely unnecessary.

Are there any other parents out there that are experiencing difficulties with this program or with their kids using this new program?
Heavy schedule
Posted 9/20/2016 at 1:33:06 PM by [anonymous visitor]
I came to Newark digital because I had a busy schedule between working all the time and going to school. Would be a lot easier to motivate myself if I knew I just had to understand and complete my work instead of having to sit there until my hours were met while also trying to balance my work schedule. I just don't think that if work is being completed and completed correctly, hours shouldn't be a requirement.
Depends on student
Posted 9/19/2016 at 4:21:18 PM by [anonymous visitor]
This is our first year doing NDA. I think it would be much nicer to be able to just focus on getting the work done than also worrying about hours. My elementary student, no problem we will probably have more hours than we need. My son in 6th grade has always been a fast reader worker, but I told him to make sure to read everything, watch all videos, play all games, etc. My 2 high schoolers, its a lot of reading but still I think they will have a hard time getting the hours needed. I've been to the public school and they don't use ALL that time working. there is a lot of down time, goofing off, teachers spending a lot of time trying to help one student, or going over 10 example problems, or trying to get a class in line, etc. You don't have that at home with one student, so therefore they should be able to get their work done faster without all the negative disruption that I've seen go on in public schools.
Agreed But....
Posted 9/9/2016 at 8:50:13 AM by [anonymous visitor]
I agree but there's one exception. For those, like me, who work fast and still get good grades, we often spend 1-2 hours, maybe 3 hours, if on a project or long assignment, we would probably start, let's say 6 am, I would finish work by 7 or 8 or 9 am.
Log 25+ hours
Posted 9/8/2016 at 7:16:19 AM by [anonymous visitor]
I think that students shouldn't have to be logged on for that amount of time.I think that as long as the work gets done, students shouldn't have to worry about the hours of being logged on.
